When to make your first HR hire (and why it’s usually sooner)

·1 min read ·PScalent

There is a predictable point in a company’s life when the founder is still personally approving every offer letter, mediating every people issue, and drafting policy in the margins of the workday. It usually arrives somewhere between thirty and fifty employees, and it is a sign that strategic HR is overdue.

The symptoms of waiting too long

You can feel the gap before you can name it. Hiring slows because no one owns the pipeline. Onboarding is improvised, so new joiners take months to become effective. Culture starts to drift because no one is deliberately shaping it. Compliance obligations pile up unaddressed. And the founder — the person whose time is most valuable — becomes the de facto head of people by default.

Each symptom is survivable alone. Together they cap growth.

Why one hire rarely solves it

The instinct is to hire an HR manager. But a single early hire faces an impossible brief: they are asked to be strategic and operational, to run compliance and culture and hiring and org design, often without senior support or established systems. Generalists get overwhelmed; specialists leave gaps.

What growth companies actually need at this stage is a function, not a person — CHRO-level strategy paired with the operational capacity to execute it.

The subscription alternative

This is precisely the gap a CHRO-as-a-Service model fills. Instead of betting on one hire, you get a named team with senior leadership and operational depth, live in weeks rather than months, at a predictable cost that scales with you rather than a fixed salary you commit to before you know the shape of the need.

The answer to “when should we make our first HR hire” is almost always “sooner than you think.” The better question is whether it needs to be a hire at all.
